11/21/2023 0 Comments Bgp route reflector![]() ![]() Route reflectors are networking routing components specific to border gateway protocol, commonly known as BGP. Virtualization removes reliance on dedicated hardware, which may lack sufficient performance and scale in the control plane and/or which may be underutilized in the forwarding path. Route Reflector operation is memory and compute-intensive and is well suited to run on x86-based server platforms. The Route-Reflector learns all routes, calculates the best routes, and redistributes the best routes to its BGP clients. Route Reflector is the only router that connects with all of the other routers, called BGP Route Reflector clients, thereby simplifying route synchronization and reducing network traffic. Additionally, a route reflector is NOT allowed to change any reflected route attribute, including the next-hop attribute. The route reflector reflects routes considered as best only. Routing advertisements sent to the route reflector are then reflected out to all of the other BGP speakers. Rather than each BGP system having to peer with every other BGP system with the AS, each BGP speaker instead peers with a router reflector. One solution to reducing the number of BGP peerings within an AS is route reflection. It works like iBGP speakers act as concentration routers, commonly known as Route reflectors. The concept of route reflectors has been developed to address the scalability problem of full-mesh iBGP sessions. In today’s networks, the Route Reflector function is usually run on an IP router that is either dedicated for route reflection or that performs the Route Reflector function in addition to other IP routing and services functions. Route Reflector is one of the most askable questions in Interviews nowadays.
